there is no way 4:44 is better than the black album. i’m on the record about the latter—or at least the vein of jay’s work it represents—being overrated relative to his other stuff, but that album has 99 problems, psa, allure, lucifer, my 1st song... come on now.DKC, Goku187, Martha Stewart and 2 others like this. -

I don’t even love 4:44 like that, it’s very good but low tier Jay imo. Equal to BP3 tho? Can’t co-sign that.Ordinary Joel, Vos, Buddha and 2 others like this. -

The main thing for me is just how many songs on TBA I still love and play even thought they’re almost 20 years old, as for 4:44 I’m barely playing it nowadays maybe a couple times a year I’ll listen to Marcy Me, k--- JayZ and OJ.Ordinary Joel, lil uzi vert stan and RetiredAccount like this.May 6, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -

I think it’s a bit disingenuous to assume he’s talking about like drakeo or greedo or any of these up and coming artists. Prob more in reference to guys famous Dex and s--- who go from having radio charting singles one year to being a literal dying junkie barely breaking 20k views on songs the next. No ones making these rappers waste multiple years salaries in a few months.
I agree jay has definitely gotten boujee, but I think he also acknowledges the system that got him his success is hugely imperfect and given how easy it is for the rich to get richer at least some of these new money rappers could get richer too. He’s arguing for uzis to turn into meeks imo, not for f---in zelooperz to rent out apartment complexesOrdinary Joel, RetiredAccount and lil uzi vert stan like this. -

I voted for Moonlight
But my opinion has changed over time. Since it dropped most of the songs had a period of time in my brain when I thought it was the best track on the album.
f--- me I can’t believe it’s been 3.5 years since this dropped.Ordinary Joel, lil uzi vert stan and RetiredAccount like this.May 6, 2026(This ad goes away when signing up) -

to be clear, i didn't. i think 4:44 is first and foremost a formally clumsy record without many good songs. you then, for some clinically unstable reason (are you still running background checks on people you incorrectly think are my family members?) tried to ascribe my ambivalence about a late-period jay-z album to my being bourgeois, which i pointed out was absurd because we're talking about f---ing 4:44DKC, Zeugma and Ordinary Joel like this. -

I have no idea if that’s accurate for wpg—and don’t get me wrong 65k is a more than comfortable living no matter where I’m the USA you live—but you also have to take into account stuff like cost of living...you live in central mass correct? And wpg lives in LA where rent is about twice as expensive, and I lived in Seattle where it’s also about twice as expensive.
I’m not saying your jobs are equal in pay because of that or anything, just that your average journalist isn’t paid as well as people might think. Plus you gotta factor in out of pocket benefits and stuff unless you’re lucky enough to land a staff position. It’s largely a gig economy out there.Ordinary Joel, Martha Stewart and RetiredAccount like this. -

ok ive been sitting on the sidelines during this essential discussion of words.... but wasnt this line part of a larger argument about like, generational wealth in the black community? not artists specific. i remember this (vaguely antisemitic) lyric specifically bc like..its not true (anecdotally heh)skip, Ordinary Joel and RetiredAccount like this.
