The main thing for me is just how many songs on TBA I still love and play even thought they’re almost 20 years old, as for 4:44 I’m barely playing it nowadays maybe a couple times a year I’ll listen to Marcy Me, k--- JayZ and OJ.

yeah the more i think about it, the crazier it seems to compare this to the black album: both stake themselves largely on first-person introspective s--- and black album washes 4:44 in that regard. this doesn’t have anything approaching the honesty of allure or moment of clarity, both of which have somewhat embarrassing revelations rendered in a way that’s so tortured. the reason oj is head and shoulders above the rest of the songs on 4:44–aside from having by far the best beat—is that it’s a return to that post-RD, pre-bp1 conversational flow that’s so great. by contrast i find a lot of the other rapping on the album messy in a kind of thoughtless way.

the most unintentionally funny line of em’s career is when he was like “i did beats for jay-z for free!” and it’s like, no, yeah, we heard them

If you think The Black Album is not a classic then you don't know what a classic is. It's Jay-Z's most polished album and the masses still play and remix that s--- to this day.
Change Clothes, PSA, 99 Problems, Dirt Of Your Shoulder and Encore (albeit through the Linkin Park remix) have all entered into modern-day pop culture.
TBA made Jay-Z into an international superstar and he toured the world and did white people festivals in the UK with that album.
