To me, it will never get better than The Combat Jack Show during their prime run. When the crew was still intact, doing shows at PNC radio, Just Blaze high key flexing on everyone. I didn’t even give a f--- about the interviews, I just wanted that barbershop banter. That NYC, cracking jokes on each other vibe. That to me put the show on a different level. Combat paved the way for most Hip Hop podcasts, especially Budden and NORE. I’ve attended events he put together back when he was still alive. He was a legend RIP
I check out Budden and NORE occasionally. Never really cared for Mal or Rory tbh and NORE slobbering all over the place and cutting his guests off gets annoying after awhile. Premium Pete, who was part of The Combat Jack Show, has some good, under the radar interviews. Talib Kweli finally put his big mouth to use and put together a decent podcast.DKC, Ordinary Joel and 1999 like this. -

when they expand on the feeling their music evokes, the reason why they made it, that's ballin. when they make content for teenagers to recognize esoteric samples during their reaction videos, that ain't ballinDKC, Ordinary Joel and 1999 like this. -

Yeah I didn't mean I like that technical stuff specifically (though I do think that's cool sometimes), but the context/story behind the artist's mindstate and creative vision for a piece of work.Ordinary Joel, Chad Warden and 1999 like this. -

I actually just hate hearing how music came together as far as technically, ESPECIALLY the layering of instruments. I imagine it would be very useful to know as a producer but I'm not very interested in producing so now I just listen to certain songs and know all the samples and what the sounds are, its almost like the songs boring to me now. That s--- ruined one of my favorite smashing pumpkins songs I vowed never to watch that s--- ever again, I saw one pop up for POWER by kanye in my recommended i blocked that whole channel f--- thatOrdinary Joel, DKC and Chad Warden like this. -

Yeah, exactly why I'm torn on it—because it's really cool hearing about the background and making of the album, but considering every single reach of an explanation for every single line is annoying.
Also, I'm sure Jay-Z's Decoded was much cooler in 2010 before RG was ubiquitous, but I read it last year and I ended up skipping reading most of the lyrical explanations because they were so boring and obvious. Beyond the lyric explanations that memoir was kinda trash in general.

I don't like the overanalyzing of music to the extent where it takes the magic away. Just me thoughOrdinary Joel, DKC and Chad Warden like this. -

I'm really torn on this one. Cuz it's obviously very detailed and mostly well researched, but it strays into rap geniusy territory at times. I haven't listened to any of it since he started on spotify so that's good to know he's upped his production value cuz in the earlier ones he'd mispronounce words all the time, the vocal quality wasn't the greatest, and he'd always have that dry mouth voice click that people get from drinking too much coffee and not enough water.Ordinary Joel, Yeez and 1999 like this. -
