Rakim's raps aren't "simple" at all.

Go listen to Follow the Leader by Rakim and get back to me.

So you've actually taken the time to listen to Rakim, and you don't like him?

That thread is a bad example because 3/4 pages is pointless arguing with a r-----; however, there are quite a few old school rappers mentioned. Also, there's a 90's playlist thread with many responses, older threads with favourite albums that had quite a bit of discussion etc, you'll have to run a search for them. The thing is that without new material, you're practically asking for threads with just yt links, or one-line responses that have been done many times in many forums, so what's the point? The best bet for a first page thread featuring old rappers is probably this

Lol they flow like normal rappers, nothing like the flows the Beastie Boys used to do. Run DMC used to do the same thing. I'll take HU over Beasties anyday. They're wack. I'm not gonna kiss their a--- just cuz they're white. I also don't understand why Beastie Boys get played on classic rock stations. Just because they're white I guess. :dno:

I agree with this. This is what I was trying to say. Not taking anything away from the old school rappers but things were way different back then. This...

They don't flow like normal rappers. And how are the Beasties being played on a rock station any different than HU being played on a rock station?

I don't hear HU get any radio play really. Plus they have singing in their choruses and play live instruments whereas Beastie Boys are straight rap and beats.

You said "lyrical technique", then act like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, KRS, and LL Cool J (80s LL) aren't better than Kanye?

d--- 1987, love this song lol

Just thinking of these in my head.

Rap wasn't as intricate back then which is why I don't put these rappers in my top 10, plus the music is just "better" Now. But Each to his own. There are still songs such as the ones above i play occasionally.

He's not one of my favorites. I prefer guys like N.W.A. Ice Cube and Nas over him if we're talking old school rappers.

Undead was all over the radio. Beastie Boys rap over beats...Like most rappers. They also have a rock type vibe to their music, like Kid Rock, who was also on rock stations. They pioneered the style, and set the tone to cross genres.

    Prolly cuz they're not

Edit: To be less snarky, these are all undeniably great rappers and really important to the development of the genre, but I wouldn't take any of them over Yeezy.

Sure they are. It's ok to admit that Kanye isn't #1 in everything. He's a decent artist, but he's not in the same league (Technically speaking) as those guys.

You can still find appreciation in the old school, timeless music is timeless music regardless. My favorite rapper of all time is Nas and he started his illustrious career in the 90s, same with other legends like Jay, ATCQ, The Roots, Common and so on that all went on to have legendary careers. But I can understand the sentiment that not all of us grew up on that time, I was barely starting elementary when Biggie passed away so theres that factor of remembering the music that you grew up to. Nowadays we have a ton of talent that can be easily appreciated along with respecting the classics that paved the way.

Rakim is generally regarded as one of the best MC's of all-time. And it's not solely because of influence, either. It's also because he was THAT good.

Now you don't have to agree, but if people were putting together a list of best rappers I'd bet my last dollar Rakim's name would be towards the very top of most of those lists

Oh, I didn't realize you were speaking strictly technically. Also I was just kind of being a d-ck because I hate "real hip-hop" people and the way OLD SCHOOL is in caps makes me think this is a REAL HIP-HOP thread. I like all the artists you mentioned, they're just not something I really listen to with any regularity aside from maybe Public Enemy and Eric B & Rakim. But who legitimately thinks LL Cool J (whole careers taken into account) makes better music than Kanye West besides 45 year olds who argue about why Afrika Bambaataa is better on the Lil Wayne facebook page?

Not a very large group of people, hopefully. My point was on LL from a technical standpoint, more directly on his early albums Radio, and BAD.
