Mar 28, 2015 Yeah I know but I've never agreed with it. I used to be a backpacker when i was younger, always heard rakim bought up, don't get me wrong he was really impressive and i understand his influence but i dont regard him as the greatest. I partially believe that's one of those things people say just to say, or because they heard it from someone else, same way people hold certain albums in a light 'just because '. That's one of the weird/different factors of Hip hop culture Now nas is top 5 to me. Its just so crystal clear this man possesses more skill
Mar 28, 2015 My fave nas track ever Recorded in 1991 pre illmatic Will be in my top hip.Hop tracks, this track still rivals 95% of songs on mixtapes or albums these days, I feel anyway, it barely sounds outdated. His flow is so smooth
Mar 28, 2015 You've never agreed, yet Nas, who YOU consider top 5, made a song called The Unauthorized Biography of Rakim to show his appreciation for The God MC. That should tell you all you need to know.
Mar 28, 2015 That doesn't make sense? Just because my fav artist likes Gucci Mane it doesnt means i am going to like him now. He is showing respect to his legacy which is enough.
Mar 28, 2015 Because most are fa---- kanye stans or eminem fans who wont listen to anything else or were born after 2000
Mar 28, 2015 There's no reason to be a prick. He has a brain, he doesn't have to embrace Nas' or whoever's opinion. Rakim hasn't released a good album in the last 15 years, just because he was one of the first to make great rap, that doesn't mean that the genre stopped there. Good guess mate. Good avatar too, but your Kendrick + Eminem one was better, too bad you changed it.
Mar 28, 2015 Because I'm not stuck in the past Plus 90% of rap before the 2000s had basic a--- drum lines (bum bum tss bum bum bum tss) over low-quality samples and generally just sounded hella basic compared to modern music I enjoy innovation Because every rapper that died in the 90s is pretty much considered a deity when if they were still alive people wouldn't be giving 2 f---s Basically, it's like an old Macintosh PC. Sure, it was amazing for its time, and if you grew up on it then having nostalgia for it is fine, and I respect it, but it just doesn't hold up anymore
Mar 28, 2015 i actually stumbled onto The Nonce a few days ago . there's so much old school undiscovered rap that it'll always be relevant, but we can't spend all our time talking about the past. we gotta see who's gunna be the ones we look back on from this generation.
Mar 28, 2015 Someone else started using it What was your point? I like more than two people artists @Skippy its not living in the past if you havnt heard a album from say 95 its still new to you and alot of them albums are much better than ones that have come out in the last 10 years.
Mar 28, 2015 I thought it was ironic, that's all. Also, you and timmy are bitching about a thread that has multiple lists with these rappers (group and solo): Nas Andre 3000 2Pac Notorious B.I.G Wu-tang Clan A Tribe Called Quest GZA Ghostface Sticky Fingaz Redman Jay-Z Raekwon Slick Rick Big Boi Q-Tip But yeah, everyone discovered rap with Kanye, you're right
Mar 28, 2015 Not ironic, i can like eminem but still realise that alot of Em fans dknt listen to rap music i listen to loads of hiphop artists. I was just answering the OP as i have also nothiced this in the top 10 producer thread i made but i out it down to lack of knowledge of hiphop producers i think only 3 people had Dilla and some didnt even have Dre Who saod sticky fingaz? They deserve a like
Mar 28, 2015 I think it depends on if you go back and listen to stuff that came before your time. Generally speaking, people are MUCH more familiar with the music that came out while they were growing up; as opposed to music that was out decades before they were alive. Now that's not to say that people don't go back and listen to stuff that was out before they were alive (because some ppl do) but someone who is currently in their teens is a lot more likely to know Kanye's music than Big Daddy Kane's. Plus, music that came out decades ago is not nearly as accessible, so it makes sense that people wouldn't be as familiar with old-school rap.
Mar 28, 2015 I love all old school rappers, this is a music site about mostly Kanye, Kendrick fans though so I guess that's why there hasn't been any discussion, there are a bunch of middle age men, their definition of "old school rap" is MMLP probably & s--- like 808s lmao. Here are my top 5 old school rappers. 1. Run D.M.C 2. Big Daddy Kane 3. Mos Def 4. Wu-Tang Clan 5. Raekwon
Mar 28, 2015 This is old school, but since it's older than Rakim, we don't count it, and we're talking about late 80's - early 90's I guess
Mar 28, 2015 What you don't seem to realise, is that people can like Kanye and listen to different music too.
Mar 28, 2015 MMLP is more than 10 years ago & you guys call it some old school music, "classic" stuff, listen to Raising h--- album & King Of Rock by Run DMC & let me know who is more of "old school" feel.
