May 10, 2015 Yeah a lot of pre-2010s music I heard when I first started f---ing with rap and back then I just used Pandora and YouTube so I got individual songs. I've been revisiting a lot of older records I used to bump and checking some of the s--- thats been recommended, and I definitely like what I hear, but idk I enjoy modern music so much more. Like, I feel like a lot of older music that was great and downright earth-shattering when it came out has less impact on someone like myself whose heard the artists influenced by them. Like the whole time I was listening to Illmatic I was thinking that it reminded me of like the grandfather to IDLSIDGO by Earl. I've always thought this but just haven't shared it, and am open to the possibility that I'm wrong, but I feel like almost all modern music is better nowadays regarding rap. Like if Earls aforementioned album had come out in the 90s it would be considered Illmatic level, and now he's barely even a blip in the rap scene. A better example might be someone like Joey Bada$$, his new album is just as good as a lot of 90s s--- I've heard, but I've heard a lot of negativity about the album being just average barring a few songs. h---, even our radio rap is better. Young Thug pushing boundaries of flow on all types of beats with all types of people>>>>>>>>> Vanilla Ice or Sir Mixalot The only thing I'll give dustheads is that lyricism and storytelling was generally much better in the 90s, but I'm more about flow and overall songcraft so that's not as much of an important point to me. I guess that sort of serves as my thoughts on illmatic as well @Narsh, great for its time but just above average now imo Keep in mind I'm fully aware that this could be me just being a dumb teenager and if there's something I'm missing feel free to smack me upside the head
