May 11, 2015 Oh I just saw he's listening to MMLP now, curious to see what he thinks of that lol. He's not mostly an Em fan and didn't like illmatic, so who knows, he may hate it.
May 11, 2015 @Narsh I need reasons tho As of right now everything I said makes sense to me, simply telling me I'm dumb doesn't make me smarter :p
May 11, 2015 Nothing you said makes sense m8 -- what about illmatic dates it? What you said applies to certain albums and artists for sure. Nas isnt Vanilla Ice ffs lol. Nas is rhyming is to the highest of technical standards. Its some of the best storytelling to date. I dont see what exactly you're getting at about the flow, and you're talking to a young thug stan. Nas is flow is ridiculous on Life's a b----. so is AZ's
May 11, 2015 Haven't had time to hear it yet, I was busy If the mixing had been good it might have been his best album, and yee NERD is dope
May 11, 2015 Mention me when you do. There's a lot of dated references on it and I want to know if that takes away from the music for you since you didn't hear it when they were relevant
May 11, 2015 You should outline the stuff you're about to listen to, would be dope to see you drop some thoughts/initial reactions to all these albums.
May 11, 2015 Pretty much everything in that post before tagging you I meant in general. The only thing I was applying to Nas is that this s--- wouldn't be revered as highly if it dropped today imo. And that's not a knock on the album it's a classic for sure but I just feel like all facets of the genre except lyricism have progressed really far. But as for my whole opinion on illmatic, the lyrics are definitely great but I'm not seeing the flow bit, all his bars sounded kinda like the typical New York rappers flows I've heard so much before. And I guess that might kinda serve as a good analogy for the rest of the music, it's undeniably good, but I've heard emulations and progressions of his music so much that the source material isn't as special to me as I guess it should be
May 11, 2015 I was doing that in the kik chat haha but I'll start posting it here. Won't be able to til tomorrow afternoon tho
May 11, 2015 I guess like this post if you want to be mentioned when I listen to MMLP so I know who to hit up Also, to clarify @Narsh, I don't feel that illmatic is in any way bad that's just silly. It just didn't really appeal to me, partially because as I've said I heard so many copycats before hearing the genuine article
May 11, 2015 I feel Skippy opinion although I love Illmatic, it's just that in general younger people can't understand at the fullest the greatness of some records. Meanwhile he respects the legacy of the album I don't see the problem.
May 11, 2015 I understand what you're saying to an extent but you can't really use the "if Illmatic was released today" hypothetical. If Illmatic didn't come out when it had, who knows what hip hop would look like today. So many artist that we know today might not even be making music had Illmatic not came out when it did.
May 11, 2015 Yeah I understood when I posted it that it wasn't a perfect hypothetical, but what I meant was if a project that had all the traits of illmatic and executed them in the exact same vein , I don't think it would be nearly as praised nowadays Heard MMLP2 and hated it. Tried to come back and listen to SSLP and hated it. Going to give MMLP a go tomorrow tho
May 11, 2015 Yeah, not a fan of SSLP myself. There's like 3 songs on there I've ever liked, and Marshalls voice is annoying af MMLP is where it's at imo
