Gates told DJ Smallz that he wrote this song while in prison.

"I wrote that song while I was incarcerated. And when I was in the lockdown cell, I couldn’t catch any hip-hop stations on my radio, all I could catch was rock and roll songs. So I wrote this to a soft rock and roll song."

When he got home, Gates couldn’t find the right beat for the song. So producer Rico Love helped bring a guitarist to the studio and Gates mimicked the sound he wanted the song to have.



This is Gates' first time releasing a “soft rock” type of song. In an interview with Complex, Gates claimed he was sick of rapping and intended to sing more. He also claimed he’s made more rock oriented songs in the past, “I just haven’t released them for fear of maybe it’s not time. But f--- that, I’mma let ’em fly. ”
