An explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York on Saturday night injured at least 25 people, the fire department said.
None of those 25 people has life-threatening injuries, according to a tweet from the New York Police Department's Counterterrorism Bureau.
Gas has been ruled out as the cause of the explosion, a law enforcement source said.
Officials are still trying to assess what caused explosion, the source said. No secondary device was located.
The preliminary belief of investigators is that the blast was caused by an explosive device in or near a dumpster, a law enforcement source told CNN. The source stressed this is preliminary and is not conclusive.
Police have increased security across New York City as a precaution, a law enforcement source told CNN.
The area of the explosion is packed with restaurants, subway stations, shops, businesses and art galleries. People living in buildings near the affected area are not being allowed in, CNN's Bernadette Tuazon reported from the scene.
President Obama has been briefed on the explosion, according to a White House official. The President will be updated as additional information becomes available, the official told journalists.
An eyewitness told CNN affiliate NY1 he was having dinner when an explosion rocked the area.
"I felt a loud explosion and I felt like a lightning bolt struck the building. It, like, shook the ground," he told NY1. "Everybody ran out of the restaurant into the street. The whole city was in the street."
He says the response by police who swarmed the area was "aggressive" but "controlled."
The man told NY1 he lives in the neighborhood and knows it well.
"I walk down the street every day. ... This is my main thoroughfare. I'm either in an Uber, a cab, or on foot on this street all the time. This is my neighborhood. This isn't a tourist attraction. It's just the middle of the city. It does frighten me."
Some social media users said the sound of the explosion was heard as far away as Hoboken, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from Chelsea.
The fire department said the explosion happened at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan.
This story is developing. More to come.

Sloppiest terrorist of all time 3 failed bombings and gets caught:
Rahami was captured after police got a call about a man sleeping in the doorway of a local bar, Sarnicki said.
When police arrived, one of the officers "tried to rouse him," Sarnicki said. "The gentleman on the ground picked up his head, and the officer saw that he had a beard and resembled the wanted person from the poster ... from the bombings."
After the officer ordered Rahami to show his hands, the suspect "pulled out a handgun and fired one shot at the officer, striking him in the abdomen," Sarnicki said. "Fortunately, the officer had a bullet-proof vest on."
The Linden cops returned fire, hitting Rahami several times, Sarnicki said.theg, Ordinary Joel, Enigma and 1 other person like this. -

Bombings in New York and New Jersey over the weekend -- as well as the discovery of several unexploded devices -- have led authorities to believe there may be a terror cell at work in those two states, law enforcement officials told CNN Monday.
And a manhunt is under way for 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami after New York police identified him as wanted in connection with the bombing Saturday night in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, which wounded 29 people.
Earlier Saturday, a garbage can exploded near the starting line of a Marine Corps charity run in Seaside Park, New Jersey.
And on Sunday night, a backpack with multiple bombs inside was found in Elizabeth, New Jersey. As authorities tried to investigate, one of those bombs exploded.
The series of attacks come as New York hosts world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly this week.
Here are the latest developments:
-- Officials want to question Ahmad Khan Rahami because they believe he is the man seen in surveillance videos rolling a duffel bag near the scene of the bombing in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, according to multiple officials.
-- The FBI described Rahami as a U.S. citizen of Afghan descent with a last known address in Elizabeth, New Jersey -- the same city where an explosives-laden backback was found Sunday night.

Ahmad Khan Rahami is wanted connection with the bombing in New York. His last known address is Elizabeth, New Jersey -- where an explosives-laden backpack was later found.
Rahami is about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. Rahami has brown hair, brown eyes and brown facial hair.
-- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday the bombs found over the weekend have similarities, suggesting "there might have been a common linkage." He said the investigation is ongoing, and he "wouldn't be surprised if it zeroes in on a particular individual, today even," and he "wouldn't be surprised if we found a foreign connection to the act."
-- A federal law enforcement official said BBs and ball bearings were among the pieces of metal that appeared to be packed into two pressure cooker bombs in New York. One of those devices exploded on 23rd Street, but the fact that it was partly under a metal trash container may have diminished the force of the blast.
-- Surveillance videos showed the same man near the site of the explosion in Chelsea and where a pressure-cooker device was found four blocks away, several local and federal law enforcement sources told CNN.
-- On Sunday night, the FBI and New York police stopped a vehicle of interest in the investigation, according to a statement from the FBI. No one has been charged with any crime and the investigation is ongoing, the statement said.Ordinary Joel, theg, asvdawg and 1 other person like this. -
